The 31st Challenge International du Vin took place on April 21st in Bourg-Sur-Gironde in the Bordeaux region of France. A total of 5,288 wines from 38 countries were tasted by both professional and amateur judges and the winners were announced on April 27th.
Chateau de Combebelle won the highest award, a Gold Medal for its 2005 vintage. Out of 7 winners for the St Chinian Appellation, only one Gold Medal was awarded. Chateau de Combebelle 2005 is a blend 70% Syrah & 30% Grenache and was made by traditional vinification spending just 12 months in 1-year old oak barrels. Catherine Wallace, Wine Maker and Proprietor of Chateau de Combebelle commented this wine shows great balance and structure which Im sure is what won this Gold Medal. She added the fruit is well rounded yet lively on the palate providing a softness to envelop the tannins. The oak has imparted some spice and tobacco character and the lovely red berry fruit aromas and flavours combine to provide an overall well rounded wine with great finish. |
